. The 32-year-old Allen last pitched in the big leagues in 2019, when he threw 23 unremarkable innings for the Los Angeles Angels. But prior to that, he spent seven seasons with Cleveland, notching a franchise record 149 saves. Over that time, he had an ERA under three with an 11.5 K/9 rate, an under-the-radar stretch that made him not only one of the best closers in the game for a period of time, but arguably the best stopper in Cleveland’s history. 

Which brings us to today’s quiz of the day. The save statistic was created by Jerome Holtzman in 1959 to “measure the effectiveness of relief pitchers” and was adopted as an official statistic by MLB in 1969.
