South Carolina Could Become Tennessee (247sports.com)

The South Carolina Gamecocks

to fire Will Muschamp. It marked the first Power Five opening we will have this cycle. With it being a job in the SEC, the job will be a hot commodity.

Muschamp finished his career in Columbia with a record of 28-30, including a 17-22 showing in league play. Simply put, that just isn’t good enough by the standards at a place like South Carolina.

What does South Carolina have to get in its nex hire to change the trajectory? Speaking on SEC Nation Saturday morning, former NFL and Alabama safety Roman Harper says if the Gamecocks don’t get it right, they’ll be in a position one of their division rivals finds themselves in.

“They need to find the right coach, somebody that has built a program from before that has had success at maybe a smaller school or has done this before,” he said. “If you get this pick wrong, you will end up like Tennessee, who is continuing to search and find this relevancy or Texas since Mack Brown and also Florida State. There are plenty of schools out there to look at examples to get it wrong. South Carolina, do not get this wrong. Don’t try to win the press conference. Win for your school going forward.”

The Vols caught eyes early in the season in the third year of the Jeremy Pruitt era, starting 2-0 and being ranked No. 12 in the nation. However, things have gone off the rails since, as they’ve lost their last four games, with some coming in blowout fashion. With a long winning streak to end last season and a hot start to this one, more was certainly expected.

With Muschamp now out of the picture, South Carolina athletic director Ray Tanner has turned his sights to the coaching search. Tanner has made it clear that he wants the process to be quick and wants to get someone with an offensive background.

“I think, as we sit here today and think about college football. … It’s a time when everybody lights up a scoreboard,” Tanner said this week. “The 10-7 games are a distant memory, so I think that’s important that we get an offensive-oriented type of situation, whether it’s the head coach or fantastic coordinator, to move the needle in that capacity.

“The other things we had, with all the passion and dedication. You just want to get the right person, with the enthusiasm. You want guys to have fun and it’s a heck of a lot more fun when you’re winning.”
