Red Sox, Martín Perez Nearing Deal (

| at

The Red Sox are close to bring back southpaw Martín Perez, per the Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. Chris Cotillo of confirms the two sides are nearing an agreement (via Twitter). Perez is represented by the OL Baseball Group.

Cotillo has said all winter that the Red Sox will need to add at least two arms for their rotation, so an agreement with Perez doesn’t preclude a later deal for another arm like Garrett Richards, Matt Moore, or Jake Odorizzi. Perez fills a big hole, however, as a guy who can eat innings, just as he did last year for Boston when he averaged more than five innings per start over 12 starts. He posted a 4.50 ERA/4.88 FIP over that span, and while those numbers themselves won’t get the Red Sox back into contention, they represent an important level of consistency that a rebuilding club like Boston relies on in order to make bolder roster decisions throughout the season.
