PHILADELPHIA — Phillies catcher J.T. Realmuto suffered a fracture at the base of his right thumb last week while trying to block a ball in Clearwater, Fla. Realmuto’s hand will be immobilized for two weeks.
Phillies manager Joe Girardi said the organization is hopeful that Realmuto will be ready by Opening Day on April 1 against the Braves at Citizens Bank Park. It would be the best-case scenario after he signed a five-year, $115.5 million contract last month. But the Phillies also said they will not have a better feel for that for another two weeks.
