Kirk Herbstreit Gives Jones ‘edge’ Over Trask In Heisman Race (247sports.com)

With just a handful of weeks left in the college football regular season, Heisman Trophy candidates are making their case for the award. Two quarterbacks in the SEC — Alabama’s

and Florida’s Kyle Trask — are near the top of the list as favorites to take home the 2020 Heisman Trophy.

Over the course of the next month, including the SEC Championship Game, a lot of eyes will be on Jones and Trask as they try to persuade voters in their direction. Both quarterbacks have been brilliant this fall, but only one of them could join the fraternity of Heisman Trophy winners. One the latest edition of ESPN’s ‘College Football Playoff Top 25 Show,’ the panel of experts debated which of the two SEC signal callers has the better shot at the award.

Former Florida quarterback Jesse Palmer gave a slight edge to Jones, who he believes is in a better situation the rest of the way. While Trask has to carry the load for the Gators’ offense, Jones doesn’t have that same burden on a weekly basis.

“If I was forced at it, I would say

is in a better situation right now simply because I just think he has more help,” Palmer said. “I think Alabama runs the ball well with Najee Harris. I think he has a better offensive line. Both of these guys have great groups of receivers, but I think Alabama’s are maybe a bit more explosive when it comes to making plays down the field. I trust their defense right now a bit more than I do Florida’s. I’d go with simply because I think Alabama has a better shot at winning a game if both these quarterbacks brought their ‘B’ game to the park.”

Kirk Herbstreit agreed with Palmer, but he didn’t want to take anything away from Trask. The Florida quarterback just threw six touchdown passes in a win over Arkansas, but like Palmer, Herbstreit thinks Jones has the better roster around him.

“Trask, right now, is on fire, but

with the defense,” Herbstreit said. “It’s more of a complete team, but [Jones] has been fun to watch. He replaces Tua, and nobody in his own fan base thought he could do it. They wanted the freshman from California to step in. He’s got Waddle down … I know Trask is performing out of his mind, but I still think Alabama is the more complete team. I would give Jones the edge there.”

Of course, all this talk could be settled on the field. Right now, Alabama and Florida are set to meet one another in the SEC Championship Game. If that holds, Jones and Trask will be able to duel it out in Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.
