New York is among several teams performing background work regarding the 29-year-old Taillon, who missed the 2020 season while recovering from his second Tommy John surgery. Taillon has been tossing from the mound and should be ready for Opening Day.
It is not yet known what the Yankees would give up in a potential Taillon trade. The Bucs focused on acquiring young talent in moving veteran right-hander Joe Musgrove to the Padres this week,
Taillon has a close relationship with Yankees ace right-hander Gerrit Cole, dating back a decade to their time in Pittsburgh’s Minor League system. The No. 2 overall selection in the 2010 MLB Draft, Taillon has compiled a career record of 29-24 with a 3.67 ERA in 82 big league starts, all with the Pirates.
Taillon’s career has been interrupted by reconstructive right elbow procedures in 2014 and ’19, plus a 2015 surgery for an inguinal hernia and a ’17 bout with testicular cancer. Taillon’s best season came in 2018, when he went 14-10 with a 3.20 ERA in 32 starts, registering 179 strikeouts against 46 walks in 191 innings.
With the Yankees potentially aiming to keep payroll below the $210 million luxury tax threshold this upcoming season, Taillon’s $2.25 million salary appears to fit the budget nicely.
Yankees general manager Brian Cashman has voiced his interest in upgrading the team’s starting rotation. To that end, the club recently agreed to terms on a one-year, $11 million contract with right-hander Corey Kluber, a deal that has yet to be formally announced.
Jordan Montgomery, Deivi García, Domingo Germán, Michael King, Nick Nelson and Clarke Schmidt are also expected to be considered for rotation spots.
