by the Padres last week in a move used to clear space for newly signed infielder Ha-Seong Kim. Allen arrived in San Diego from Cleveland last summer in the trade that also brought right-hander Mike Clevinger to the west coast, but Allen appeared in only one game for the Padres.

Allen’s reputation is more for stellar defense in the outfield than his bat. The San Diego native has rated above average by Statcast’s Outs Above Average metric in each of the last four seasons while producing a career .239/.298/.343 slash line with eight homers at the plate.
