Drew Brees Placed On Injured Reserve (247sports.com)

The New Orleans Saints have placed

on injured reserve as he recovers chest and rib injuries. Brees suffered multiple fractures in his rib area and a collapsed lung after checking out of the Saints game against the San Francisco 49ers last week.

Brees is required to spend a minimum of three weeks on injured reserve. He is eligible to come off the list in Week 14.

The Saints have reportedly named Taysom Hill the starting quarterback over Jameis Winston against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday. It will be Hill’s first NFL start under center. Reports have circulated that Hill got the majority of the snaps this week in practice.

The Saints sit at 7-2 and atop the NFC South. They will play the Falcons twice and the Denver Broncos in the next three weeks.

Brees sought a second opinion on his injuries. The reports came back with a similar diagnosis after his initial MRI results. He will now look to get healthy on the sidelines. He mentioned after the 49ers game that he felt he was not effective and it was the reason why he declined to continue the rest of the way.

“I was not going to be able to be effective,” Brees said. “It had nothing to do with pain. It was definitely just what my body was going to be able to do or not be able to do. You always worry about halftime because you sit for so long. And so, when I came out the second half and started throwing the ball, it became really apparent that I wasn’t going to be effective.

“I’m just taking it one day at a time. I have done that this entire season. And I will continue to do that. I am not sure what tomorrow holds. But you can know I’m going to do everything I can to be as effective as I possibly can for next week.”

Hill has attempted 18 passes in his NFL career. However, he offers a unique dynamic to the Saints’ offensive attack. Hill is explosive and has the ability to make plays in a multitude of ways on the field.

The Saints have lined him up at receiver, tight end and out of the backfield. Hill gets an opportunity to stake his claim as the future quarterback of the Saints. He signed a two-year contract worth $21 million this offseason.

Saints head coach Sean Payton believes that Hill has great potential. He said this offseason that he envisions Hill being able to get a shot at the quarterback position when Brees retires.

“When that time comes — and that’ll be probably at some point sooner than later — and Drew (Brees) decides to retire, I see Taysom (Hill) being a guy that has a great chance to come in there and become that quarterback,” Payton said.

Payton will get a good look at Hill this weekend. It might not be the circumstances he envisioned, but one that will provide valuable information as Brees works his way back into the starting lineup.
