The Cubs and veteran outfielder
The 33-year-old Maybin was with the Cubs last year following a midseason trade from the Tigers. He appeared in 18 games for Chicago during the pandemic-shortened campaign, hitting .250/.304/.365. He had a strong season as a backup outfielder with the Yankees in ’19, posting an .858 OPS with 11 homers in 82 games.
Maybin will likely compete for a backup outfielder role behind starters Joc Pederson (left field), Ian Happ (center) and Jason Heyward (right). Chicago also reportedly agreed to a Major League deal with Jake Marisnick earlier this month — he will be the top candidate for the club’s fourth outfielder job. The club has right-handed-hitting Phillip Ervin on the roster for outfield depth as well.
The Cubs are Maybin’s 10th Major League team. Along with the Tigers, who drafted him 10th overall in 2005 and with whom he made his MLB debut before two more stints with them later in his career, Maybin has played for the Marlins, Padres, Braves, Angels, Astros, Mariners, Yankees and Cubs.
