Cesar Hernandez will return to Cleveland in 2021, a source told MLB.com’s Jon Paul Morosi on Tuesday.

The free-agent second baseman has agreed to a deal with Cleveland, pending a physical. The team hasn’t confirmed the deal, which was first reported by MLB Network insider Jon Heyman.

Hernandez was excellent for the Tribe in 2020 after signing a one-year deal with the club last offseason. The 30-year-old batted .283 with three home runs and an American League-leading 20 doubles while also winning the AL Gold Glove Award at second base.

Before signing with Cleveland, Hernandez spent his first seven years in the big leagues with the Phillies. In his last full season with Philadelphia in 2019, he hit .279 with 14 home runs, nine stolen bases and 71 RBIs.

The Tribe bringing back Hernandez — who has played almost exclusively at second base since he became a full-time Major Leaguer — is interesting in the wake of the Francisco Lindor trade, which netted Cleveland

in Andres Giménez and Amed Rosario. Though Giménez and Rosario are both natural shortstops, it had looked like the Indians would play one at short and the other at second.
