The College Football Playoff is much anticipated in 2020 during this unprecedented college football season. When the College Football Playoff rankings are released, it’s practically the March Madness selection show each week.
So far, there are dominant teams at the top of the AP Poll and the top four for the initial CFP rankings are likely Alabama, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Clemson. However, the top four is far from a foregone conclusion, just like in normal years.
This season, teams are playing unequal amounts of games due to COVID-19 and truncated schedules. Other teams could make a run, such as a Group of Five member like Cincinnati or multiple SEC teams, say Alabama and Florida. Plus Notre Dame is a member of the ACC this season so they have a better shot of claiming a spot with a potential conference title on their resume.
CBS Sports’ Jerry Palm took a shot at predicting the first College Football Playoff rankings of the season. Palm uses the criteria of the eye test, head to head (if applicable) and conference championship (if applicable). The first rankings are set to be released on November 24th.
Listed below are the predicted Top 25 for the first College Football Playoff rankings.
19. Iowa State
17. Coastal Carolina
14. Oklahoma State
